Childhood Obesity Citing numerous studies, the Mayo Clinic reports that childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past generation, and nearly 20% of youths aged 12-19 are overweight, with obesity increasing from 5% in 1980 to 18.1% in 2008. Obesity among the 6-11 age group has increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. Obesity is the result of a simple formula: too many calories in and too little calories burned. Clearly our more sedentary lifestyle is a contributing factor, but genetics and, especially diet, play significant roles. The fact remains: childhood obesity must be addressed.
