Overcoming Fears and Phobias with Hypnosis We all experience fears from time to time. A healthy fear is a natural survival instinct, alerting us to danger. For many people, however, their fear becomes a constant obsession that severely limits their activities and enjoyment of life. Fear of flying, crowds, dogs, spiders, heights, open places, and others can significantly impact one's life. Children's fears of the dark, school or being left alone can adversely affect their developing personality. Some fear can threaten one's health, such as a fear of the dentist, needles or medical procedures. In many cases, people adapt to their fear and learn to "live around" them. They only seek help when a life change requires them to face their fear such as an abscessed tooth or a much-needed job that requires frequent flying. Hypnosis and Fear Medical Hypnosis is very effective in overcoming fear and phobias for two reasons: (1) studies have shown that phobics, as a group, have high hypnotic capacity making hypnosis an indicated therapy, and (2) the techniques of hypnosis eliminate the fear and anxiety of the initial desensitization stages. Often, fears and phobias are the result of an initial
traumatic exposure to the feared object (or experience), Adults more often have a repressed unconscious association with the feared object (or experience) or an initial traumatic exposure. Depth Hypnosis techniques including Regression Therapy, Time Line Therapy™, and Hypnoanalysis are very effective in revealing the source of the fear. In many cases, awareness and cognitive restructuring are sufficient to eliminate a long-time fear. While the Behavior Modification technique of desensitization is the most common approach to overcoming fears and phobias, administering desensitization under hypnosis enhances the effect dramatically. Using hypnosis allows the patient to remain calm and relaxed, thereby eliminating the physical component of the fear response, and the dissociation techniques of hypnosis allow for cognitive restructuring in a dissociated state, eliminating the psychological anxiety. Numerous studies have shown that hypnosis is more effective than desensitization alone. The patient learns to confront his fear in a step-by-step approach that "protects" his vulnerability and reduces anxiety. Patients are then taught self-hypnosis techniques for re-enforcement when needed. The patient is taught not only to acknowledge the fear, but to change his perception of it. He depotentiates the fear so it is no longer overwhelming and is taught to feel a sense of security and control. Treatment of fear and phobias at Medical Hypnotherapy Associates includes:
