A Reiki treatment is conducted through a series of carefully administered touch patterns. The patient lies on a massage table, fully clothed, and the practitioner begins the "laying-on of hands" in a specific sequence designed to transfer the energy to where it is most needed by the patient. A full treatment can range from 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the amount of energy needed.

Reiki is a laying-on of hands healing technique used since before Biblical times. It was rediscovered in the late 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, who gave it the name Reiki, which means "universal life force" in Japanese. Ki is the life force, the nonphysical energy that gives life to all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life force or Ki flowing through it and surrounding it. When it dies, the force departs. When your life force, or Ki, is low or restricted in its flow you are more vulnerable to illness. When your life force is high and flowing freely, you are healthy.

All healers use the life force or Ki, but Reiki is a special kind of energy that can only be channelled by someone who has been attuned to it. In addition, many people are born with the gift of Reiki and are considered "natural healers." When such "natural healers" receive a Reiki attunement, their powers are significantly increased. The practice of Reiki is the art of channeling this universal life force to promote physical, emotional and spiritual healing.
